PRESIDENT'S  MESSAGE

My thanks to our members who braved the heat and took photos of the people, entertainment and more at the Oviedo Independence Day Celebration.  Luckily it cooled down a bit as the sun dropped and we enjoyed taking fireworks photos with an unobstructed view thanks to Fire Chief White.

We have added two new items to the newsletter.  Vallie, our VP, has been scouring the web for sites of interest to photographers.  And Scott, our Mentor, has agreed to write up some technical tips to help you get the most out of your equipment.  I hope you enjoy these new articles.

Keep cool and please participate in our do it yourself field trip and bring some intriguing photos for our "What Is It" challenge to our next meeting.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Susan

FIELD TRIP - "WHAT IS IT?"
What is It?

When:      Any time?

Where:     Anywhere?

The July field trip is not an organized event for a specific date and time.  It can be done at your leisure, at your convenience,  in the air conditioned comfort of your home if you wish,  and at any time between now and July 18.

We invite you to take pictures of common household items, everyday objects, but take the photos with a twist.  Use macro to take it up close, use zoom and focus on only a small part of the object, or take a normal run-of-the-mill photo and crop in to a partial that might make guessing what is is more difficult.  You don't  want the photo to be too easily identifiable, but at the same time, a challenge for everyone to identify what you have photographed. The game of "What Is It?" on July 18 guarantees an interesting meeting.

There will be a Zenfolio gallery to which you can upload your photos, or you can bring them to the meeting on a thumb drive.

MENTOR MOMENT with SCOTT
BLINKIES ??

Do you use 'blinkies' on your camera for review purposes, if not, why not?

Blinkies, or highlight warnings, are an excellent tool to use to review your exposures out in the field.  One of the truly liberating aspects of digital photography is the ability to see what we took instantly.  The trouble is variations in screen brightness and ambient light range don't help us accurately judge our exposures.  Luckily there are two very useful in camera tools to help, the histogram and blinkies.  The more powerful histogram takes a greater understanding of what it represents to use 'on the fly', but the blinkies just flash where pixels are overexposed to give us an instant check for lost detail.

Remember, there is nothing inherently 'bad' about overexposed pixels, if that is what you want.  Just remember when you get overexposed pixels, especially in a block, there is no detail in that block and post processing generally can't 'fix' it.

So how do we see these blinkies? On a Canon go into the 'Menu-Playback (the blue options) and look for the 'highlight alert' option then just select 'enable'.  On a Nikon look under the ' enu-Playback Menu-Playback Display Options-Highlights' and tick the box. Nikon users can often select on or off during playback by going left or right on the rear controller too.  For other types of cameras consult your manual or do a quick Google search with your make, model and the word "blinkies".

Now take a picture with some overexposed highlights and look at the review. You might initially find that distracting, but run with it for a week or two and you should find it helps a lot with your exposure. Remember, you will get much better image quality if you slightly overexpose in camera and then lower the exposure in post rather than the other way around, understanding this and using blinkies can really help your pictures.

WANDERING the WEB with VALLIE
"5 Hot Tips for Improving Your Summer Photography"
by John Barbiaux.
Tip #2 - Be Specific, Don't Spray and Pray.

Recently, I read an article online entitled "5 Hot Tips for Improving Your Summer Photography" by John Barbiaux.
Tip #2 made me giggle thinking about a recent trip to Savannah.  While riding on the "not-so-slow" trolley through downtown, I used the spray and pray technique.  Praying my lens would auto focus on the right spot, that the person in front of me would move their hand or body out of the way, and praying for an out-of-the-blue snow storm to hit (it is so stinking hot in July).
Barbiaux challenges you to be specific, consider each shot you take...think about whether or not the subject is remarkable enough to take the time to photograph.  So once my feet were firmly planted on the ground, it was game on with time to plan my shots.
